The "free market" is a wonderful "libertarian" idea... and an oft used catch cry of capitalist collectivism...

But to the latter it's a complete anathma... and no more than propaganda... in the same vein as "democracy"...

To the former... it just remains a pipe dream...

I believe the requirement to tax big businesses that pollute is a given, as do most people, but I also believe there are better ways to go about it than the blanket carbon tax. It's complex and we could all argue about it till we're blue in the face... and probably still not get it right.

However, big business aside, it's us, the populous, that creates the demand for big business' products and services that creates the atmospheric carbon and other pollution/waste... We need to curb the unfettered consumerism...What about a combination of the following:

1. A tax based on the square meterage of your house/s, to discourage people building/buying excessively large houses. Include both PPR’s and investment properties in the tax. Double the tax for second/holiday homes (exempt multiple investment properties from the double tax rate so as not to discourage investment).

2. A tax on your electricity/gas bills based on the square meterage of your house divided into your bill, to stop excessive consumption, even by smaller homes.

3. An annual tax, on a sliding scale, on your car rego based on the cubic engine capacity, or efficiency rating of your vehicle. Double the tax for a second/multiple vehicles registered in the same persons name. A similar tax could be applied to boat rego’s, the bigger the boat, the bigger the percentage of tax you pay.

This way, those that want to consume excessive energy... pay more for the privilege!... Like the extremely rich that want to show off their wealth with ostentatious houses, huge boats and imported sports cars, or the F.I.F.O. worker that has a 500hp GTS Commodore, as well as 200 series V8 Landcruiser to pull his 25ft boat with twin 250hp outboards, or his two jet skis, or his 350 Chev powered LC Torana drag car.

This way, low income families, or old age pensioners won’t be subsidising the lifestyles of those mentioned above, which is what will be happening with the carbon tax in its current form.

No, this can ONLY occur when govts print money. Like we have had for the last xxx years, pretty much since 1913. That is unhinged growth, and THAT is why we have depressions and recessions and crashes. With free market money the economy actually grows in real terms and is not retarded.
Wouldn't you call the US real estate bubble unghinged growth? Unhinged growth means it will one day collapse, which is exactly what we keep seeing, economic crashes. Nothing to do with free market but the govt manipulation of the money supply.

Chinks in its armour ??? We don't have any free market economies! You have to understand that all the things going bad in your so called "free market economies" are caused by the exact opposite. Corrupt Capitalism, deals between large corporations and POLITICIANS, money in politics, printing bucketloads of money out of thin air, govt grants to private companies for weapons, "green" energy, charity, the list is very long. Don't forget welfare and general transfer of money from the rich to the poor.

Because you are either heading in one direction or the other, and if you take notice of the legislation that gets passed it's quite obvious we are heading in the wrong direction. Increasing welfare, reduction of private property rights (ask TCLynx), anti-Terror laws, more wars, economic crises. Definitely the wrong direction...

I agree, thats why we need to define what we are talking about. And a pipe dream indeed, but we need to head in a certain direction. The one we are going in now is the wrong one.

gday Belleye, im in south lake with an IBC/Blue barrel system thats been running for about 5 months.

Hiya, just popping in to see whats happening hubby and I are looking at doing Aquaponics in the outback, further inland than Kal, well north anyways, hoping to pick up our stuff next visit to Perth most probably April as the dog needs an op, so looking at hints tips etc, with dealing with extreme temps, though been a cooler summer, only several weeks fo 40+ so far, but the humiditys a killer.

Hi I'm in Coolbellup 6163- was wondering if there were any other APers nearby? Would be handy to get to know a few APs nearby to swap produce, ideas and even 'fish and veg sit' in case someone needs to go away.

I am in Rockingham. Have a system using 2 IBC's. Just got a harvest of trout out of it. Marron still going good and have two dozen Barra for the next harvest.
