Well just investingating every thing at the moment, doing a shade house with a wicking bed system at the moment as will be going away for a while in december/ january and it will be easier for my neighbour to look after. Will most likly look at AP in the new year but still would like to see peoples systems before then.

Can you just do a pond the size I might have and have your vegies growing in containers around the side. It would mean a constant flood of the bottom section of the containers much like wicking beds. Would this get the benifit of the fish water but just have to recycle tank water for the fish,maybe using a pump powered by a solar system.

For anything bigger than Jaymies tank I think you'd need a Solar System to power it ..... mayber a whole darn Galaxy .... :lol:

Well we all just use what we have available and if my tank is no good as a water tank then it gets cut in half and used as fish tanks . Now back to what I was asking?

Maybe the grow tanks can be set a bit higher which would keep them out of the flood zone but still offer shade to the fish and keep the foot print of the system compact , At the moment we are experiencing temperatures in the 30C every day, forget the weather report and after 6 years of living here and growing vegies in the ground this year it is just to bloody hot too constantly, and I like my garden and want to grow what I eat if possible.

Option please?

to be honest it depends on how many fish you have

in a tank (or tanks ) that size you could have enough fish to feed an army BUT to keep the water clean you would need an area the size of a footy oval to grow plants (perhaps an over estimate

)

so i reccon in your case its better to decide on how many fish you would like to stock and work out how much grow bed or how many plants you will need to keep the fish happy

you could grow plants on the top of the water using rafts with little problem giving shade for the pish

Hi I'm in Brisneyland 4051.

I have a small ornamental pond in the courtyard of my small groundfloor apartment. The courtyard is dominated by my good mate, a Leopard Tree (as yet un-named, it's bad enough that I have a tree as a friend).

I have some polystyrene brocolli boxes and some disused 'self watering' plant pots that made great homes for canetoads. I hope to turn these into growing beds.

The 90L pond has a 2 outlet pump that runs a fountain and a small waterfall. There is one Comet in the pond and about 5 Pacific Blue Eyes. There's some aquatic plants.

I have failed repeatedly to grow tomatoes in Brisbane due to a fungi soil problem that we get in the subtropics (from what I can work out from Gaerdening Australia) and am looking to set up a cherry tomato growing system in gravel. It looks like I just need some gravel. Where do I get gravel?

Any landscape yard will have 20mm drainage gravel. Wash it to remove the fines and away you go. Your problem may be getting a small enough load so you don't end up with a great heap left over but there are ways of overcoming that.

- welcome to the forum...be aware that gravel gets VVVVEEEERRRRYYYYY hot when exposed to direct sunlight and will burn seedlings....judicious use of shade cloth minimises this however :wink:
