Hi Ao - My wife is Thai so she reads, writes, speaks, and bitches in Thai and she is good at it, at least the last one. LOL. She is paying for all I spend on this project and she told me today I had better be getting near the end. LOL about three more times. I can't help but laught when she gets so up tight about money. It's cheap here In Thailand. If I took her to USA she would go crazy between the expense of everything and the cold weather and no Som-Tam English note - (that's what Thai women eat every day so they don't die).

Anyhow AO - Is that a reference to Aquaphonics in Thai? If so good because I can't seem to be able to explain it to my wife and brother in law what aquaphonics is all about. I want to educate them both on aquaphonics. Johnra

Sawadee Khrup Khun Ao+,

And thank you for the links.

We spoke with Leung Trang today and they will have availability of the Poppper hydroleca early next week - they will also deliver to Jomtien which is great.

I found a very clean re-con IBC up on highway for 2900 - looking forward to attacking it with an angle grinder tomorrow... :)

Many thanks,

Tom.

Hi Tom
After I have built a few system of AP. I think media culture is expensive.
If I make new system I would go airlift pump, media grow bed mix DWC.

I think gravel is good and cheap for media. Hydrotron is very expensive.

By the way, Thai reference for AP is very rare. Here are some bur not so good.

Hi Ao+,

Personally I'm a big fan of NFT - after I'm familiar with the IBC setup that will be the direction I head in.

On a different note can I ask you - do you know of any plants shops that would sell young food crop plants suitable for the IBC system here in the Chonburi area?

That would save me a fair bit of propagation time and help me get things growing asap!

Cheers,

Tom.

I think there is no such shop here in Thailand.
You have to grow from seed. and many kinds of plant are difficult to make it germinate.
Many growers keep it secret.

BTW NTF may too hot for plant in Thailand. I see most of Hydro grower use styro foam for in sulation.

Hi Tom, I am new to AP. Just started last year. I am an old hand at farming/gardening in USA and Thailand and do a fair amont of dirt gardening here. It is only by chance in some plant place that you will find food type plants already started. Otherwise get out the seed packs and go for it. Trail and error works best here. I am from Florida and even my knowledge of growing plants in a warm climet did not pay off here. This place is tropical all the way. Good luck. John

Hi Ao+,

I thought that would be the case but thought I'd ask - you never know... :)

NFT works fine in hot climates, there are plenty of productive NFT setups in hotter environments than Thailand. However it will be a very steep learning curve for me with this in AP, it's clearly not a forgiving system and the high temperatures will only make it harder to control.

The IBC was chainsawed up today, looking forward to setting up the flood and drain system early next week when the bits and pieces arrive from the UK.

I'll post pics when I have something worth posting.

Many thanks,

Tom.

Hi Johnra,

My background is hydroponics so the growing of plants in soiless systems is already familiar to me, I guess I'm lucky there.

I've ordered some Jiffy pellets from the UK that will be here next week, I'm just keen to get growing asap so asked the question on the ready to grow young plants.

Interesting times ahead, thanks for all the feedback.

Cheers,

Tom.

Look forward to see your system. I think you have experience in growing veg. May be I can learn from you, I think grow veg. is difficult to me.
Let me know if you have your own thread.

As you can see I went with a very simple flood and drain system - I'm familiar with this method of hydroponics and have always had good results with it.

It turns out the blue central pipe was unnecessary, it drains fine with the two black PPI fittings on a 3000L hour pump.

So, now I need to cycle the system - what's the easiest way to do this? I don't have access to another system to grab some water from, so I need a practical solution that will be available here in Thailand.

I'm planning on using some goldfish type fish for this system if it make any difference, nice and easy to get hold of here...

Cheers,

Tom.

Right, just been doing some reading...

I this fishpond in the garden of my rented house:-

With this filter:-

The fishpond was empty when I moved in at the beginning of the month so I added some Koi Carp about 2 weeks ago, although the owner of the house said that there were fish in it until fairly recently anyway.

He had managed to accidentally kill them by draining the pond overnight, so as far as I know it is disease free.

So can I just add some water from this pond? Or scoop some of the gunk out of the filter and drop it in the IBC fish tank?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree...?

Cheers,

Tom.
