So what exactly does it mean to cycle a system?

In a nutshell Gooman.... it means establishing the bacteria colony that converts ammonia > nitrite > nitrate....

Same thing happens in an aquarium filter.... just as esssential to "cycle" an aquarium as it is to AP...

Read through the Nitrogen Cycle and other info in the "Useful Information" and "FAQ's" sections of the forum.

It is essential that you understand the nitrogen cycle... as it's the core concept that drives aquaponics...

Try Downloading the BYAP magazine Gooman, there are some interesting articles explaining the nitrogen cycle and cycling of systems, and lots of other useful info.
