I have had to restart. I added 2 dwb of 300 l each, and an nft. What with the bottle tops, i have had to stop the water pump for 24 hours whilst i unblocked and reset the piping, but kept the airpump going. I hope I have corrected the design flaw. The ph is 9. the ammonia level 0.5 mg/l, the nitrite have dropped to 0-0.25 from0.25-0.5 mg/l. I am adding fermented pee still.(the ammonia is sitting in a bucket mixed with water until the chloride (1 ppm) evaporates. No fish, no plants still(germinating). I have read that i need at least 2 weeks before the ammonia/nitrites spike, then settle. I would like the baby tilapia i hope to buy to feel comfortable in their new home. (Salt bath ready, will add sea salt 1ppt when i have the fish. This part of aquaponics is very precise, very demanding. You cant go against nature |

Stopping the water pump won't have hurt the bacteria that were developing so probably won't slow the cycling down much if at all. Now if you refilled with chlorinated tap water then that's another story but then you'll be on your two weeks to a month schedule. It's Chlorine that is the concern NOT Chloride - Chlorine will kill your bio-filter. |
