A place to discuss aquaponics

Hi, I'm very excited about aquaponics and i'd really appreciate any advise i could get on where to put my aquaponic system.

We live in So Ca, where it's usually warm, though the winters can get a bit chilly. Our house in under a canopy of oak trees and gets filtered light throughout the day. I'm thinking I might need a green house with grow lights? Any thoughts?

You may be able to center prune and thin oaks enough, but it will still be tough. You really want full sun for at least 5/6 hours, more is better.

Oak hey... ever thought of getting some truffle spores for the base of the trees?

I'm in kinda the same boat, being under a canopy of mature walnut trees.
This is my first winter with a fully cycled system and I'm discovering my plants are doing better now than during the summer now that the tree leaves have dropped.
Maybe plan on flipping your growing season?

Sacramento and OC aren't too different climate-wise, we're having good luck with winter veggies growing in low 50 degree water and air temps down to the low 30's overnight. (occasionally)

My system used to be under a large Oak too. I moved it out 5' to get further out into the sun and in the week that it has been moved I've seen my chinese cabbage almost double in size. It is a very tough process moving all of these rocks around and hard on the back. Make sure you choose your location wisely. I thought that mine was going to be OK and it has been there for a year.

Rangebob, that's great you were able to get your system moved, impressive growth since you moved into the sun!

I recently added a handful of salvaged mirrors to the shady side of my growbed, they bounce some sunlight back into the plants. I don't have anything quantitative telling me they help, it's just visibly brighter now.
