My System is a 1000lt fish tank with one standard grow bed & one half that size almost 3years old , in the last couple of months I have been getting high nitrate readings continuously, I have changed about 50% of the water at least 3 times replacing with scheme water. I have lost about 12 nice native goldfish, only have about10 left. I am reluctant to get more fish until the water is right. I have had good growth from the plants in the system, so wonder what the best plan is to get the nitrate down from 160 plus.

I do wonder if there is something else there.. that is causing the issue..

BUT -- could you set up a flooded and shallow tank and just grow "Duck Weed".. something that grows well and consumes the nitrates.. AND is useful as a by-product..
( ISSUE - increases solar exposure and thus water heating )

The other possibility is to have a deep media somewhere.. and exploit the Hobby-Fish breeding thing of Anaerobic Bacteria, converting Nitrates to Nitrogen... ( If I read the articles correctly )

as commented elsewhere, I have a Cichlid tank that has not had a water change for years and whilst there is some algae on the glass, the vital readings are all near zero..
Difference - deep aquarium sand = anaerobic nitrate conversion..
