Does anyone know of freshwater shrimp species that can be raised for consumption? I looked through the fish glossary and dint' see anything about it. I've got a 50 gallon system with 6 smaller goldfish in it right now, and I wanted to grow shrimp for a food source. |

given a 50 gallon tank, you might be able to grow a couple freshwater prawn (macrobrachium rosenbergii) - but you might have some trouble finding just a couple maybe a few crayfish? |

Watch out for the goldfish if you throw in crayfish though. |

some salt water shrimp species can be acclimated to freshwater like pacific white shrimp https://srac.tamu.edu/index.cfm/getFact ... sheet/158/ There are also freshwater prawns but i think you would be lucky to grow two of them in 50 gallon aquarium http://www.aquacultureoftexas.com/ I think it may be hard to grow enough shrimp in a 50 gallons to make more than a appetizer |

My understanding (2nd-hand, haven't done it yet myself) is that you need something to keep the shrimp from killing each other all the time. It could be a high water flow coupled with netting (so they spend their time trying to hang on rather than fighting), or some way of compartmentalizing them. I haven't made it over to Aquaculture of Texas yet (http://www.aquacultureoftexas.com/) but from their online presence they seem to be doing something right, and they've been around for quite awhile. I think they partner with another group a bit north of here (probably Wise County Shrimp Farm http://www.wcshrimpfarm.com/ but I'm not certain), but regardless - you should be able to find out a great many of the particulars on shrimp farming from these two groups. |
