Water loss in aquaponics system.
How much water do you normally lose to evaporation in a 600 liter system.
Cheers

Are you human?: Depends

This question is really hard to answer. There are many many factors. It really depends on how hot the day is and the surface area of the tank exposed to the sun, the media you use. I have assumed you also considered transpiration as a factor, so the type of plant, the amount of plants, etc all comes into play.

I guess the real question back to you is why are you asking this question?

I am losing about 15 litres per day ,we only have a small number of plants. Surface area exposed is about 1 square metre growing medium, about the same in tank. Weather same as Southern River. Pump is running all the time.
cheers Poly

I think first thing to check is that there is no leak anywhere in your system. I just calculated that in the heat of summer I could top up about 10cm of water in my tank a week. That equates to about 300L of water per week for my system.

Really need more information poly..

What is a small number of plants? What are they and how big are they? But besides that, I wouldn't be surprised if that's evaporation and transpiration, we have been having some hot days.

I do 300l per week in a 1000l system in summer as well. So 15l a day for a 600l system is in line with that.

I would be close to 400l per week on each of my systems, but i am growing some melons, cucumbers, tomatoes etc very bushy and thirsty. I have just fitted shade cloth around the sumps on one of my systems so will be interesting to see if that makes a difference.
