I am trying to find what the best growing plants are for a small aquaponic system. I am looking to convert small hang-off-the-side tank filters into small systems. I have heard cutting the bottom off of romain stalks and putting them in water with almost no additional lighting will grow nicely. I am looking for other fruits, vegies, and herbs that will do well in a constant flow system and not need more than indirect light.

LETTUCE and leafy greens need little light....herbs do ok too, just check the seed packs they tell what kinda light, get low light stuff but I use a 8 tube T5 light over my lettuces about 2' away and only run 4 of them 200 watts and my lettuce never stretches for the light...

Thanks! Ive seen some systems that just have herbs and veggies floating in the same tank as the fish. What would work best with that? I see alot of betta fish bowls with a plant just placed inthere and the water is crystal clear and the plant is healthy as can be.

Do you only want to do edibles? There are lots of semi-shade plants that would take up lots of nitrates: philodendron, spider plants, ferns, swedish ivy, etc.

I would much rather do edibles but if not it is not that big of a deal. What ever gets the water clean!
