I thought I did a good job rinsing my clay pellets but, now that the water flow is working, the water in the fish tank is pretty murky.

Presumably the water (via the grow bed) will collect dirt and dust over time so am wondering how clear the water should be? I don't really want to waste a few hundred litres of water (empty and refill) if I don't have to.

Thoughts very much appreciated!

Edit: will introduce trout in a month or so

It should clear in time but adding some egg whites can help clear it quicker. They work as a coagulant and clump the fine material together so it drops out and is filtered by the growbeds

I thought they would be fine to be used for our aquaponics system.

Having second thoughts now, is rapeseed cooking oil fine to be used?

What? No. Oil is nothing like eggs.

Use the white only. it is a pure protein that coagulates the fines so that these can be captured in your filtration system. The yolk is nearly pure fat and wont work.

you need to separate the yolks from the white... did I just read what you wrote correctly?

If you are using yolks too, then you may as well chuck in the bacon! ;)

If it is a bit murky, I prefer to run the water through some polyester insulation material, it clears the water very well.

Yeah a waste of good eggs if you ask me, all comes back to the patience thing...
Gypsum works too but I think that a couple of days on constant flood will help also.
In a couple of weeks it'll be fine.

What if I just eat bacon next to the tank? Maybe a kilo of bacon per 1000 lt of fish tank :funny1:

A better idea would be to cook the bacon and eggs (soft boiled, with soldiers with REAL butter). Eat them next to the GB and through the egg shells in the GB.

Sit back and wait for the water to clear*.

* may take days or weeks or months either way don't worry about and get some patience. NOW!
