| Post subject: | Getting Started from Scratch? |
Hi guys, long long time interest and now just getting started. Murray Hallam's DVDs are they worth buying to get started or is everything I need here somewhere etc lol? I would rather spend the DVD money on feeder fish breeding tanks (I have had fish before just not aquaponics) Any help would be greatly appreciated, there's so much info to take in. Thanks David |

Free here, at the top of the page called IBC of aquaponics. No reason to pay for any info, you can get all you want right here. |

Hi and welcome  You dont have to spend any money to get information as its all here. If you are thinking IBC's then the link at the top of this page IBCofAquaponics is all you need. Also the memebers threads area should give you plenty of ideas Enjoy |

Some people don't like to go wading through the internet trying to find good information or separate the good from the bad, for those people buying books and DVDs sometimes helps but they still usually show up on the forums for help anyway. For backyard aquaponics, this forum is a good source of information. The IBC of Aquaponics is a good starting point and full of ideas. But I usually recommend people start off reading the Basic Info section and the Useful info section and then pick a few of the big long old member system threads to read through so you can learn some from the mistakes of others rather than having to make them all for yourself. If you can ask around a bit, perhaps people can help direct you to a member system or two that might roughly match what you have in mind or at least be located in a similar climate to your own. Feel free to start your own thread so you can post ideas for your own system and get advice and help before you get too far along, sometimes people can chime in with ideas or recommendations that could save you lots of money or trouble. |

I've watched Murray's dvd's religiously (i.e while drinking wine and eating cheese). Even though you can learn the same things here on the forum everything is compacted and easily understandable in the dvd's. You don't have to scroll down through 7 forum pages to find the next bit of information... But there is a lot of videos on youtube as well. If you can't afford them then forums and youtube is the way to go, but the dvd's are not a waste of money in my humble opinion. |

I must admit that Murray is an enjoyable bloke to listen to. And the forums have all the info. I would advise some caution about simply following YouTube as a method of learning aquaponics though since I've seen some people "teach" how to build some things on YouTube that are definitely NOT the way to go. Please do extra research beyond just watching a few YouTube videos and make sure you actually see examples of things growing and surviving long term in some of the designs before you trust that they will be a functional way to go. |

Just don't follow everything you hear in DVDs and read in books because chances are the information could be poor or out of date, despite what authors/presenters and/or producers claim. |

And some authors will readily admit that there are some mistakes in their book, but their publisher had them held to a deadline. Meg Stout's "Complete Idiots Guide to Aquaponics" is an example. She is pushing for a second edition to fix the mistakes, but it will probably be a little while before it happens. Not to say it is a bad book, there is a lot of good info in it. You will, however, find all of the info here too. |

Murray Hallam is quite a character and his video's very watchable. Perhaps the biggest thing i got from him is that you need to have patience and not expect miracles in the first six months. If you are into DIY - the best material is at the top right hand corner of this webpage. |

Murray's DVDs are great, watched them a few times, but he only has the 3 IBC method with 1 fish tank... I really want to start with a kick though and have 2 x 1000ltr tanks running... 1 IBC with 50 - 100 Silver Perch / Jade Perch 1 IBC with 50 - 100 Barramundi / Murray Cod I would love to get some redclaw running (in the sump?) Any ideas on a system would be great, I can get 5 IBCs now and a few more if needed as time goes... Thanks David |

So what makes you think you can run 1 IBC with 50 - 100 Silver Perch / Jade Perch, and 1 IBC with 50 - 100 Barramundi / Murray Cod... joined together... with 3 IBC grow beds? |

I wish you good success with setting up your system. But I think the amount of fish is far too big. I have two ibc tanks with now 22 barramundi each (stated with 27 each fish cycling) and have to upgrade the tank soon to a 5000l water tank or similar. Just imagine that you want barramundi to be at least 450mm before harvest and that can happen under optimum conditions in approx 7/8 months. They need room to move / breath. I also got one sump tank with 20 of cherabin and doesn't matter how much food I put in, they are destroying each other and will be cooked very soon for that reason. The other sump held 2 red claws, but one ate the other, also with plenty of food supplied. Recommended on the 1sqm is a Max of 4 to 6 red claws with lots of PVC pipe as hiding places. |
