I live in an area where it does get cold to about minus 9 degrees at one time. Now these water heaters do they keep the water warm for the grow beds for plants which cannot handle the frost to well. I am hoping someone can tell me if these plants will survive during the winter while growing in the AP system. |

Heating systems have been discussed extensively in the past and there are quite a few members battling the cold with great success. From what I have seen, most have opted for a hot house/green house or dome arangement and utilise rocket mass heaters and alike to keep temps up inside the green house. Although, for an exapmle - a typical aquarium heater, say 300W in an single IBC system that was located outside in the open, would need some extensive insulation. Even then, the heat loss through the GB on those frosty nights would be great. I would imagine you would need quite a large heater in such circumastances which would drive your power bill up. Maybe somene in the colder locations could provide some input.. |

Agreed. At a minimum you need a greenhouse over the system for a start |

Cover over the plants is a must. 2 or more layers of plastic with an air space between them works much better. I would put the fish tank in the same enclosure since the tank will give off heat. Styrofoam insulation on all sides of the tank is a big help. Styrofoam on the top of the water also. For a heat source I use a woodfired water heater. An aquastat opens a zone valve to send hot water through cpvc coils in the fish tank. You could make a wood fired hotwater system by using a chimney heat exchanger that takes the exhaust gas and heats water then sends it to an insulated tank. A system like that must not be sealed it must be vented to the air because water expands and contracts with temp changes. The open system allows for the expansion/contraction. If you have a large enough woodfired system, excess hot water could be used to heat the enclosure. If you have a south facing wall a roof and walls could be built to make a greenhouse. Insulate the North wall (the wall of the building). jim
