I've always loved sustainable gardening and aquariums/fish and just recently I discovered aquaponics as a wonderful way to combine things I love.

I was thinking at doing a simple one tank one grow-out bed system. the one I was looking at was the first in the IBC of aquaponics guide. http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/information.html

any thoughts on this system? I was a bit confused about fish stocking, I want it to be something edible if possible (no goldfish) and was looking at tilapia? would they work here and what stocking should I use?

thank you for reading!

Hi and welcome to the forum :wave1:

The IBC of aquaponics is a great read when starting out. There is also a IBC website that may also be of use to you here http://ibcofaquaponics.com/

You may have to contact your local government body to check what is legal in your area in regards to fish type.

Possibly someone might tune in here that is from your area.

Good luck and keep the questions coming!! :thumbleft:

Thanks for the welcomes guys! (or gals)

and thank for that website, I'll definitely read trough it. I want to get a system running soon, but this might not be a very good season to do so, since it's already mid-summer...

I'm also worried about tilapia not surviving the winter here, so I might need to think about a different type of fish. maybe blue gill would be a good choice?

Perhaps you can do two crops a year, I'm not sure how quick bluegill are..
