Ph level vs Nitate intake by plants

I am new in aquaponics and have a little question about nitrite. Is pH condition affecting bactery effectiveness to convert ammonia to nitrat? I read that the most perfect pH for aquaponics is 6.8 - 7.0.

I know it's a few posts down the track and I'm taking your thread back around in a circle, sorry Mike, but I haven't had much time to check out the forums over the last few days and only just got around to reading the papers Darren linked to a few posts back.

From that I think we can draw the conclusion that dramatically reducing the water temp could partially reduce the toxic effect of the Nitrite within the fish, mainly due to more DO available in the water and the slowing down of the fishes metabolism, but the detoxification of Nitrite from the fishes system and the return to normal haemoglobin levels will take much longer. Not only that, it required a 20°C drop in water temp to reduce the toxicity within the fish by 50%.

There was no mention of a reduction in the water temp reducing the actual level of Nitrite in the water, which is what Kiara98 claimed could be achieved.

So again, do you have any other information that demonstrates what you are claiming Kiara98... I’m also waiting, as I’m sure others are, for you to enlighten us as to what the “couple of other things that you can do” to reduce Nitrite levels in the water, actually are... As you have mentioned in a number of your posts, we’re all about sharing information here, so why are you holding out on us?

Knock yourself out... We're keen, seeing as we are yet to see any pic of these numerous systems you've had/have... Please show us how, other than partial water changes and bio-filtration, we can reduce the amount of Nitrites in a system.

I have used Seachem Primein my quarantine tank. It supposedly binds nitrite to make it less toxic. It did seem to work in a nitrite emergency one time, even though the nitrite test still showed nuclear purple after using Prime.

But since I learned how to properly use salt I have not used Prime for nitrite issues.

Be careful if nitrites are in purple. That is dangerous!

Just an explanation of these other methods of reducing Nitrite levels would suffice. Most of us are pretty cluey around here, with the aid of a few pics I'm sure we'll get it without actually having to see your system/s in person.

Thanks for the offer, but I've got enough mates already and it's proving increasingly difficult finding time to arrange a catch up and a beer with most of them... As it is I'm still at work at this time on a Friday night... There's that and the fact that I thought Freo would be more blunts than beers.

Curious sense of humour guys... Beer and Whisky shouldn't be laughed at...

Klara, please excuse the boys, it's just that these guys have a wealth of experience and like to go with what they have learned from that experience. We all know that there are some basic AP rules however there is a lot of grey, like you I like my sump but also run a pist system also, both essentially give me the same results, temperature fluctuations being the main difference. I never have nitrates in either of my systems I have a low pH in winter, 6ish and a high pH in summer ,8ish due to our high pH scheme water. I grow seasonal veggies so don't know if pH makes a difference with nitrate uptake like minerals do. I'd go with whatever a trade certified horticulturist says.

But, how about those pics of your system sometime?

Now, I'm going for a beer.
