Hey Boris.

thanks, mild sarcasm aside.....

having only joined here a day or so ago still finding out how this place works, hence hadn't discovered how to search for desired info yet. ( did after id started this thread but never mind- been most helpful advice all round...)

your system looks really well thought out and neat, and thats one serious air compressor!
is that an aquarium model?
will go back and have a closer look at your thread there.

cheers

so now, have one black 1000 ltr IBC but no cage to play with.

have to completely re-think my ideas for a basic test system but i do like a challenge.
will start a new post in members systems as soon as i have any significant progress to report

Dagz,
DON'T USE THE BLACK IBC!!!
It has been manufactured from recycled materials and could contain a multitude of bad toxins!! They Colour these containers (and others) black so you can instantly tell they are definitely not food grade! You will kill fish!

No wonder it was so cheap. Use at your own peril, or at least your fishes peril!. I may be totally wrong in this case, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Cheers IanK :?:

God damn it...really?

jeez man.....thought theyd all be the same stuff and rated for water....crikey...dunno what i'll do now...

..this isnt for my main/eventual system tho, just proof of concept and experiment, so i wasnt gonna be putting anything significant in it..

.just a few yabs and maybe some goldies to get some bacteria goin my gravel....

ive got a black fish pond from the B shop down the back and it looks like similar material..and the mosquito fish and yabs have been livin in that for 12 months no hassles....

anyhoo, thanks for the heads up, as i def wont use this as a sump for my system...

anyone else used a black ibc???

cheers

Daz

And the black ones tend to be used for chemical storage... often quite nasty stuff that might react or degrade in sunlight...

Mind you Ian... I don't think the white IBC's are necessarily food grade either...

Thanks Rupert....

I know that whatever prev, it has been used on a farm as a grey-water overflow for 2 years or so...so good chance whatever was in b4 has been well and truly washed out with greywater......i wont be using this in my 'proper' system anyway--which i plan to set up in a few months, but think it should be ok to maybe get a little trial system going....?

Ive seen a few other trial systems on here with equally dodgy components ( B's black plastic boxes for instance...) so since i wont be eating anything out of this first system ( as i said, just wanna try and culture some bacteria for my real system ) im not overly worried now....

im pretty certain im gonna build 2 x 2000 ltr fibreglass tanks over next 4 months with a friend who knows how and has a biigg shed :-D -- so at least ill know ill have 2 non toxic fish tanks..custom made for my space here....hell maybe even build me a sump while were at it....
and learn how to fibreglass stuff ! which will be a potential useful new skill....

anyway..better start dreamin how im gonna set this all up now....

cheers

D

Hi Dagz
Have a look at these ones on my site, they are food grade and it is a delivered price.
http://www.rainwatertanksdirect.com.au/ ... -tanks.php
They are cheaper if you want non food grade.

Thanks for the link. they look nice..

.but i have this peculiar space that does lend itself to square/rectangular tanks, rather than round ,\
which is why im prob gonna custom build some fibreglass ones with my mate...

the trough ones look good.

cheers
