Sorry I missed this question earlier - Basically the fines are a dust/grit like material that in this case comes from the volcanic rock breaking when pieces rub against one another. When you first get the rock there can be lots of fines. Rinsing will get rid of most but you never totally get rid of it because you're always breaking more off. Once the fines have settled your water will be clear.
