Getting water to flow uphill is easy... in the 1600s Escher drew a sketch of how to do it!

Hmmm, add some plants to the channels, fish to the tank, and you have an AP system too  :geek:

About the only way you'll manage this is if you seal the top (or bottom) chamber.

If both are open to the atmosphere you've got buckleys.

I was going to suggest he needed to seal the top as a joke, but then i wondered if that would even work, then i thought "hmmm i might look like an idiot if it still didnt work."

if this did work, which i doubt, it would actually make a good extra, free to run filter.

Which is fine, until the water gets too hot, since you'd have to keep heating the water to keep a thermosyphon going - the moving water is always losing energy due to friction... otherwise it is a perpetual motion machine!

It is still not a perpetual motion machine because it needed some energy input to start and it needs energy input in the form of heat.
Even if this did work the way he had it, with no heat.... its still not perpetual.

Stick a towel in a basin half filled with water and just let the edge of it overhang a bit, then wonder why your floor is wet.
