From what I've read it's because the solids are present in the tank and can attach to the roots causing growth problems and disease in the plant roots. If you have a sufficient method of removing the solids then you shouldn't have a problem. I've seen many models working just fine on top of a fish tank so it can work if you monitor the waste.
