DwayneD, an IBC (intermediate bulk container) is a type of container used to transport somewhat large amounts (275-330 gallons) of various liquids. These are a favorite among the AP crowd because they can be easily modified for use with an AP system. They are general use, so some are used to contain foodstuffs (desirable for AP systems) and others contain chemicals you wouldn't want to mix with potential food sources.

You can find out more about these and other common types of hardware used with AP systems by checking out the Hardware Glossary (viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1273). You may also want to check out the Basics of Aquaponics (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=229), where many of the basic concepts are pointed out.

Thanks a lot. Very informative. Aquaponics is a very simple concept but learning the in and outs, glossary and how to put together the system requires quite a bit of studying. I can see I need to scour this site more. Thanks for your help.

Glad to help. I'm an AP newbie as well. I find it fascinating but there's a lot to learn, as you pointed out. I've had to do quite a bit of reading on this and other sites regarding plumbing, electrical wiring, and even physics (trying to figure out bell siphon issues :-) ). Good luck with it!

Cool
I will be building my system in the Philippines. A leaving the rat race kinda thing. I'm in Saudi Arabia now. Looking forward to rain! Cooler air and fresh durian. My system will be for family use in the beginning. Later we may do more with it. I've found lots of free reading and some free courses. Check out open source sites. :)

I can hardly believe nobody's spoken up, but I guess it is understandable - everyone's busy!

I'll be out of touch for a few days, but after August 4th if you're in DFW and feel like taking a few food-grade 275-gallon totes off my hands (for free!), please let me know. I now have too many, and I'm scheduled to pick up more (which I feel obligated to do in order to maintain the beneficial relationship which provides me with these).

Heck, I'd love them. Are they still available? Not many people on this list are from the States.
Maybe I could get them mailed to my sister in Del Rio, Tx. Would you be willing to do that?

Mailing them would probably cost more than they're worth. I'm not sure of that, so I'll check, but you can usually purchase good used ones for between $50 and $100, so if the freight postage is over $50 then you're losing money even for free totes.

Someone in Oklahoma has expressed interest on the ones I'm giving away now, but I occasionally have spares so let me check shipping rates and I'll get back to you.

I would call Recycle Totes the owner tom lives in Texas and can help you find some decent totes for free.. They do alot of business in Texas, but sometimes they have small customers where its not worth there time to get the totes and the companies are willing to hand them over for free.

Shipping them to Del Rio seems cost-prohibitive. I checked a couple of places and couldn't find a quote much less than $300 for one, and nearly $700 for all four. It would obviously be far cheaper to purchase them locally, or at least from a closer location.

That said, if you know anyone who's making the trek anyway, and have room to carry them, then problem solved! I realize that's unlikely, but please let me know if such a situation arises.

Thanks for checking out the prices. I appreciate the effort. I'll just have to get them closer to home.
Thanks,
Dwayne
