Who knew shopping around for pumps would be this much fun??

If you're going with a larger water pump, buy a timer... you wont need to divert excess water as you can just run the pump for a shorter duration. If you do need to divert flow, well, you know what you'll need

If you don't have any fish yet, grab a small bottle of Charlie Carp (ammonia source to start cycling with). See if they have thermometers and freshwater test kits (both exceptionally useful and highly recommended, but not absolutely necessary)

Oh... another thing...

BEFORE you buy ANYTHING, draw a detailed plan of your system; check it twice. Have someone else check it.

Measure twice. Cut once.

Easier and cheaper to change the plan than change the system!

Have some very rough diagrams. Might upload them at some stage to get some feedback.

The API kit is very popular (have one myself) -- pH, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.

You should still have a thermometer as total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) monitoring is dependent on pH, ammonia concentration and temperature.

It has M.Head of 2m and only uses 23W.

It's also half the price of the 2000lph model.

There's usually a cost a balancing act between the purchase price and the ongoing operating cost. If the capacity of the pump is less, you'll need to run it long in order to turn over the water, if it gets sufficiently small you'll need to run it continuously but then you might not need to also run an air pump.

I recently bought an Everbilt submersible pump that puts out 1,400 gallons per hour (5,300 liters) at 1/6 horsepower. I was experimenting with this pump and my siphon that i made. I am new to this for like 4 weeks now. The pump is twice as powerful if not more powerful than my house hose connected to the wall. I'm planning on returning this pump and buying a Wayne 1/10 HP pump at 660 gallons per hour. So 11 gallons a minute. I was wondering if i hook the pump up and have an on/off valve connected to the hose before it goes into the grow bed and don't have the valve completely all the way open. Say it's only half open.. will it affect the pump..??

I recently bought a 1/6 hp pump at 1,400 gallons per hour (23 gallons per minute) which is at least twice as powerful than my garden house pump for my house. Which is beyond powerful enough!! I recently figured out how to make a siphon. I'm about 4 weeks new to this. And I'm planning on returning this pump and getting a 660 gallon per hour pump at 11 gallons per minute. And i was wondering if i have the pump flowing into my grow bed and i have an open/close valve on the end of the tube. And say the valve is halfway open.. will it affect my pump? Because not all of the amount of water flow is going through the pipe as fast as it is pumping it? Will this affect the pump at all in any way? Or will it just slow the amount of water being pumped through the tube and not hurt the pump at all?
