I have a few 5 gallon containers for my aquatic newts and salamanders. I am trying to figure out a floating system. I also am looking for something that requires little to NO light. I hear lettuce works well but not sure. I am using the small baskets fillted with hydrotin, floating on a styrofoam dock. I put a small lettuce plant in each container (3) and they all got soggy and died. Can anyone help me?! I want to 1stly filter the water without pumps and minimal light, and also grow edible plants.

If I've read this right, what you're basically trying to do is put a floating raft on top of a fish tank, and let it filter the water, and grow lettuce on top with no light, and no pump to filter the water, or even a regular aquarium filter?

If it was that simple, I'm thinking that every third world country would be using that technique.

There are some ornamental indoor plants that can survive on low light, but not no light, I think you'd struggle with lettuce.
