I am planning on setting up a aqua phonics system. I am also looking at a hydroponic system as well. I have found all kind of helpful information except how deep the grow beds need to be. Anyone has any advice?

Also I have read about all the different grow media. However I wonder if you can use something simpler like the gravel used in fish tanks or sand. Thoughts?

growbed depth will depend on what you want to grow.. shallow beds are ok for things like lettuce, green onions, etc, and deeper beds are better for plants like cuke's, corn, tom's(deep root plants)

sand will clog, small gravel would probably clog as well.. "river gravel" at about 20mm is good, just avoid limestone

I am quite new to aquaponics. I am planning a system consisting of Rubbermaid products. Are these products okay to use as GBs and FTs? Are they 'food safe'?

Thank you very much for such a quick response! I will keep my upcoming system updated; it seems THIS is the place to get the AP info. I downloaded the IBCs of Aquaponics and readily accept the suitability of such containers. I just happen to have enough Rubbermaid totes lying around, and their history (contents) are known to me. So, i figured I'd get started on a small experimental system just to get my feet wet, so to speak. Thanks again!!
