Changing the water can actually slow the process of cycling quite a bit and changing the water can also lead to renewed algae blooms. Since it is already done, ya can't undo it but completely blocking light from the water would have taken care of the problem without the water change.

Aqua using UV will also kill the bacteria you need, I had algae for 6 months and the fish were fine, but cover the fish tank with a tarp or similar, even a couple of layers of shade cloth, maybe to hot for a tarp in your part of the world, as others have also said increase air and pump cycle times, it will still take a few weeks to clear and as far as I have read green water is something that happens in AP, someone suggested to me that it may happen twice, which has happened but I have direct sunlight blocked from tanks now, system still gets light though, if you read the label on the Algae chemical you want to use it reads "do not use in tanks that have fish for human consumption  " or similar
