I read somewhere that ants were often after water. We had a major ant Coup d'état in our kitchen and, in desperate hope of some kind of diplomatic resolution, decided to just believe the water thing in blind faith. We put a bottle of water in their path (they do love a path) and the only time they ever move past their water bottle these days is when it runs out of water. Then they spread out all over our house in recon mode till we fill their bottle again ... ants are my friend now. (or else I'm guessing)
