Post subject:  Any Accredited Affiliations or Orginizations

I am a newbie to AP but have quickly caught the bug. After my first set up I would love to get additional information. Although I am confident I can learn everything I need to know from all of you, I was wondering if there are any orginizations or accredited programs or groups for AP. IE, architects have their AIA? Are there any national or international AP growers associations? Thanks in advance.

I think a few people have tried to start such things but so far, most groups (other than all of us right here on BYAP) are still pretty small. Now there are programs at the University of the Virgin Islands where they are doing aquaponics. There is a place here in FL that offers traning classes (morningstarfishermen) and I believe Friendlys in Hawaii are also offering information and perhaps even training. Oh, there might be a place up in Wisconsin that would be much closer to home for you. I believe most of the better stuff is down under with our there. Having said all that, I've never taken any of the classes so I can't really tell you from first hand knowledge but if you are good at researching stuff here and like the DIY tinkering, the classes are probably overrated unless you are planning on setting up a commercial facility.

The answer to your last sentence is yes. Although financing is available for a relatively large startup (not my money) I would be foolish and self destructive to do this with my current knowledge base. Herein lies art of the problem. AP is still fairly new compared to traditional farming and it seems as though many peole have been successful with many different methods. I can not attemp ebb&flow as we will need to go vertically indoors and their is a weight problem. I am rebuilding my system tomorrow with three of four tiers high. I have germinated plenty which are ready to go into a system so I will be able to build the framing and have it going tomorrow since the fish culture is ready to go. It seems that the rule book is still being written for all this science. Most of its contents will most likely come from this site. So although I have hurdles, vertical, indoor, NFT, I have had good luck so far but need to feel confident before embarking on anything of that scale. Needless to say I will be probably be spending a lot of time reading back posts here for a long time. :D

I have to agree with TCLinx, You can probably get what you need and a whole lot more here. I as a newbe you may want to get the BYAP cd's and publications. Also beware there are a few AP organizations who are peddling AP info for outragious prices. I would ask around here before dropping any big bucks for that info or training.

If you are needing to go with NFT, the important part you will have to deal with (on the AP side of things, lighting is a whole other issue.) is filtration since pumping unfiltered fish water into your NFT channels will cause some trouble with gunk build up on the plant roots and you need bio-filtration to support your fish.

There are others on the forum who know more about the "other types of filters" out there. I personally know about gravel filled flood and drain grow beds, it takes about 25 gallons of flood and drain gravel to provide enough filtration for 6 lb of fish. I know that there are systems out there where they filter out and remove solids and then pass the water through a bio-filter before sending the water to floating raft or whatever kind of growing method for the plants, these systems are better for growing leafy green veggies as it seems much of the phosphorus is removed by removing the solids. The main issues I have with "other than gravel filled grow bed filters" is the need for daily removal (if not daily at least often) of solids and back flushing of the filters. I know that Joel (earthbound) has a new commercial style system going that is using a different method for dealing with solids that sounds promising but is still new and I haven't heard much details other than it needs lots of aeration.

Good Luck with it all

I have actually been removing the solids after moving through the pipes before reentering the ftank. Perhaps I am wrong but it seems the solids also carry some nutirents. In addition to clean the pipes, I made the system to be able to have access to both ends to flush the pipes. The filtration tank for the solids at the end before entering the ftank is suspended above the tank with rainfall type trickle of about 80 holes leading back to the ftank to aid in airation and help remove excess amonia. Perhaps I need more solid removal before entering the tubes, but not yet. Time will tell I suppose. Thanks for the input.

You can get away with solids building up around the roots in the pipes for a while but when it gets too bad, it could be nasty since by that time the roots of the plants are all tangled together and hard to pull out for cleaning.

Good thing to keep everything as accessable as possible. Always makes life easier.

I have already done this once to make sure it will work. By flooding the pipe under pressure (low) it cleans the solids from the roots without damage to them.
