His lease ran up and he was moving on. I doubt Colin will comment on the rest.

That's a shame I just read through the whole thread hoping to see how far it had come.

What the is happening?

Not sure if this has been covered yet, only just started reading the post tonight, look into Arduino. It's a small PC programmable microprocessor that you can wire up with various sensors, input/outputs, motors, etc. You can get a whole range of sensors for everything from PH to DO2, CO2, etc. Add a GSM shield to it and you can connect a mobile phone simcard then you can program it to text or email you with updates and alerts whenever you want.

There are a number of members using Arduino. Neither OBO or Gemmell are around anymore so the info will not benefit them sorry.

Although I ran into Colin last week and he is doing well if anyone was interested.

Hope he doesn't mind me saying but he's on a mining lease now looking for that pot of gold but still doing his maintenance stuff on the side. Too busy for AP I'd say and I can understand that first hand. The love kinda fizzes out after a few years.

granted this has always been a hobby for me and i never tried to make money or get rich off of aquaponics.

I dont burden the forum with my problems but aquaponics has been my "escape" for the last couple of years and i believe that even if i lost my house and had to move back into an apartment or with roommates or both, i think i would still have a 10 gallon tank and a "grow bed" (tray?) in the window with some cilantro and chives.. you dont have to have an epic system to enjoy raising fish or gardening.

I'm a bit sad to see that Colin has retired his system. I helped him get the Council approval for the original operation with an application for an AP system and sales of product.

Life can easily get in the way and Aquaponics isn't easy to move from site to site. I'm glad to hear Colin is doing well and I wish him well now and into the future. Perhaps he will come back to aquaponics again someday as a hobby when life isn't in the way.

I can vouch for this, moved house and left my system behind with plans for a massive expanded system at the new place. unfortunately new bathroom laundry master bed and WIR are taking all my time these days. However I do miss coming home from work and unwinding while feeding the trout or just checking up on the system.

Gday guys, just thought I would post an update on post Aquaponics system life.

Living off grid around 40km north of Kalgoorlie, on a gold mining lease, so power for aquaponics is not available.

The reason for dismantling the commercial system was council and fisheries being a pain, causing issues for the wife, and as usual their visits happened while I was working away. Marriage was more important than fish, so the system had to go.

I will be putting a small system together in the near future, utilising solar powered everything except for a little aerator. It will only have ornamental fish, edibles are too hard to grow out with the seasons we have out here, without intensive care.
