The concept I'd come up with over the last week or so, basically boils down to an AP system that best suits a commercial scale, that can then be heavily stocked during the summer months, with a controlled bleed off and top up (water exchange) system to cope with the excess nutrient load that the AP system can't handle.
Or you could say that it is a flow through aquaculture system with an aquaponics filtration set up to maintain water quality during winter months when the water usage and therefore the flow through drops off.
I think I just said the same thing twice?

Have been considering this since pretty early on too DexterK. We have probably got it easier in that we have Citrus so have a constant, year round irrigation schedule if needed, but then you have the advantage of no foliage during winter for cash crops where we are hindered by thick foliage except with new plantings. Although not sure if cash crops are doable with drips? Ours are under tree sprinklers.

What I was wondering is whether instead of siphoning off water from the system, what about incorporating a swirl filter and bio digester? That way you should be able to slightly increase stocking density as well as lighten gb solids load, the digester should liquidise the nutrient rich solids enough to pass through drips - might need extra filtration?, and in your off season you could either turn it off and drop fish stocks a bit, or use it for compost, mulch, worms etc?

(Just thought Id put my ideas out there - not sure if they would work but interested in any thoughts as its what we are hoping to try eventually) Do you have a fertigation set-up?
