I just got my AP system working: Question- what Vegetables will grow in direct sunlight in Austin Texas, I have Mint doing great, but want Vegs. I appreciate your help. Thank you Larry |

G'day Larry, There are plenty of plants that will grow in your full sun and they will grow better than plants in the ground because they have more water available to them. Here's the planting guide from our magazine, that will give you a rough guide for some of the things you can plant now. Attachment:

The high-fruiting plants tend to like the most sun: tomatoes, peppers (capsicums), melons, squash etc. and are the least likely to get fried. Corn, too, can take a lot of heat. |

I'd find a planting guide or planting calendar for Austin specifically. Example: Spring: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/arch ... den14.html Fall http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/arch ... irect.html You would be region three. Also, I think a lot of people would recommend you be super careful with the mint - it is a very tasty but very weedy type plant that can take over any container you put it in. |

50% shade cloth works for others that cant handle it.

I have not found anything like likes the sun and heat where my system is located. It is on a concrete driveway so it gets a little extra reflective heat. I have had to put up shade for just about everything I have tried. Yesterday my sump ran dry. A couple hours without water and no shade and just about everything died...it is HOT and the sun is pretty intense here. IMO you should just plan on some shade during the 1-3 hours this time of year. |
