Post subject:  Health of water dechlorinators

I'm about to harvest my Barra that are about 50cm long.
Are there any health concerns in eating fish that live in water treated with dechlorinating solution? I only recently thought of this. All the water I have been topping the tank up with has been dechlorinated with a dechlorinating solution for fish tanks. This has been going on for the last 8months
Any advice would be appreciated.

What have you been using Rich??

You could always purge your Barra in water slated to 3ppt for 2-4 days... which might help...

The product is designed to rid the water of chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals as well as help with fish health. I'll have to check the brand. I am purging the barra in salt water at the moment after an unedible barra meal (non purged). I think the high nitrates in my system contributed to the extreme muddy flavour. Hopefully the next meal will be delicious.

If you read the fine print on the bottle, sometimes it does state "Not meant for fishes meant for human consumption.".

I have tried fish purged in salt water as well as straight from the aquaponic system and both were found to be pleasant tasting. I have never used any products to treat either my bore water or rain water, and would never have any intention to use unnecessary or unnatural products.
Seems that many producers strike fear into people and they feel the need to reach for pesticides, algaecides and other water treatments.

There is a whole natural world that when in balance does a pretty good job all of its own to support healthy life forms including us.
(Almost without a trip to the local B or aquarium shop, believe it or not.)

with declorination, i honestly wouldnt bother about it if you are just topping up the tank, might be an issue if your filling the tank for the first time.

and if i was to dechlorineate i would use activated carbon, its simple and the only residue is carbon which i dont think is goint to be an issue and mostly cause i can get it from work

Cheers

If you can find out what your water supplies are treated with, it can help you sort out what if anything might be needed to make the water suitable for aquaponics. If just chlorine, the water can be aired out for a while before being used to top up the system and avoid the need for any chemical products.

Chloramines are a little harder to deal with.

If you can look up the brand name of the product you used, you should be able to find the MSDS sheets to see how dangerous the product really is.

The product is called Armour coat. It has no info on bottle with regards to safety in human consumption of fish and unable to find MSDS for it. Have purge a barra for last 7d so will cook it up this evening and see how it goes. My water supply is chlorinated so in the future will probably just let top up water sit for chlorine to "blow off". I was using this product for convienience as quick to dechlorinate water but at the time didn't think about it causing health issues.

G'day all,

We use a product manufactured in Australia by Aristopet called Aquamaster Water Ager - Chlorine Neutralizer info can be found here:
http://www.aristopet.com.au/?page=72&item=751&product_search=&dosearch=
And I have been told through their rep that this is food safe, it also has a notice on the bottle saying safe for tank water.
Assuming Your Armour Coat is from the same manufacturer, the MSDS and info sheet can be found here:
http://www.aristopet.com.au/?page=72&item=737&product_search=&dosearch=

Hope this helps.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Thank you very much for the info. It was that brand. Should be fine.

Post subject:  Re: Health of water dechlorinators

Sorry... but IMO it wont...

The claims made by the product are misleading... and the principal ingredients "SODIUM THIOSULFATE"... (the principle ingredient in pool acid).... & "EDTA DISODIUM SALT" somewhat dangerous to human health...

The supposed "neutralisation" of the chlorine.. is due to the breaking of the chlorine ions by acidification.... which would occur by UV sunlight and bubbling anyway...

And, in terms of chloromine... it merely disassociates it into a less harmful form of ammonia.... which then under the same acidification... is likely to further breakdown into the harmful form of ammonia...

See this thread... it's all been discussed before... viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6903

And search the forum for more concerning "chloromine"....

AP systems are not aquaria with ornnamental fish... they're more akin to RAS aquaculture systems growing fish for human consumption... and should be treated as such...

Hi Rupe :wave1: , you beat me to it... so I guess I shorted my post...

RichA, did you actually read the MSDS for the ArmourCoat? As far as I can read, the Aquamaster Water
Ager and ArmourCoat are two different products... ArmourCoat is also a heavy metals neutralizer... and
I believe it is that part that is harmful for human ingestion...

Check out this link as well...
http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6052&p=200574&hilit=chlorine+neutralizer#p200574

I would suggest that after today, you take the ArmourCoat and put it aside for strictly aquarium purposes.
Especially when you said your water is chlorinated...
