As per any hobby we can always spend $$$ like theres no tomorrow, but has anyone gone to the effort of calculating how much their system(s) plus food for fish is costing v Kilo of vegies/fish produced for the table. or make it simpler cost of feeding v cost of food fish/vegies produced.. Just curious |

Way to many variables to give one straight number or answer. This may give you an idea of system running costs which is based around the BYAP/CHEIDY systems. http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/Travi ... ystems.pdf |

Jayandra has costings in the Baw Baw Community Garden thread viewtopic.php?f=18&t=21796&start=120 He also did aspreadsheet of a simple IBC system with estimated running costs and savings in fish and vegies. |

I'm afraid figure costs vs. produce/fish. I did that once for a fishing trip and the results weren't pretty. For me, the AP is a hobby, so I'm not too worried about a return. The new RAS is more of business, and I want to get my money back and eventually make a profit. |

Hi The veg/herbs I would grow anyway. They are a payback for my time. The fish are the bonus. I think three to four years to cover the cost of the capital investment. The fun I have..............Priceless!!! |

Ahhh, that was interesting, Richard Chiang came down to the shop one day and asked if he could do a cost benefit analysis of our systems, he had heard of aquaponics and liked the idea but wanted to prove to himself and provide information to others showing the viability. Very nice bloke.... Though I did have someone write to me later saying he'd made an error in the water costs or consumption somewhere..
