So I've been wanting to get into aquaponics for quite a while now, but have a few very important questions before I consider building a quality system. First, how much food can actually be produced? I am a vegetarian and living a single life. How large of a system would I need to support my own lifestyle while also having the luxury of sharing with friends once in a while? Any help is appreciated.

I think that's a very difficult question for somebody to answer, there are way too many variables which we can't control. Beyond the actual size, what's your climate like? How much F&V do you actually eat? How well can you spread out planting crops, so they don't all ripen up at once? If you plant something like bok choy, it'll be ready in a 6 weeks, lettuce 8-12 weeks, tomatoes 8-17 weeks.

You can plant closer together in AP than in the ground, because there is no nutrients/water competition, but they'll still compete for light, and some plants get big.

In my 2.4m x 1.2m gravel bed. I sprinkled lettuce greens over a quarter of the area, and this lettuce kept out daily salads going for 4 weeks straight, however, it was hot, went to seed, and I'm growing more now.
