I've read about starting the system with Ammonia, so I'm looking around for "pure" ammonia. I found a gallon that says pure but the ingredients lists a 2nd ingredient of a surfactant - to me, that means a soap product to help it not bead up on whatever you are cleaning. Question is, should I be concerned about it? I shook the bottle really hard and could not get it to foam even in the slightest amount so I'm thinking it is a pretty miniscule amount.

Thanks,
John

See if you can get a fish emulsion, as long as it is pure fish. Then depending on your tank size to the amount you use.

Urine 5/7 days old will do the job. Fresh will as well but the old stuff is better. Better from someone who is not on medication.

Stick with natural / organic products, no additives and you should be fine

Yes, the surfactant will quite possibly kill any fish you put in later. Doesn't matter whether you can see it foam or not.

As ccBear said, just take a leak into your tank a few times - the urea breaks down to produce ammonia

I purchased my Ammonia from a US Chemical Shop.

They had 28% pure Ammonia. I was not able to locate any without the soap in it.

They sell pints, quarts, gallons at a reasonable cost.

In this area Weis grocery stores have their brand of ammonia that does not foam when you shake it and doesn't have any fragrance added.

I checked many stores for ammonia that didn't foam before I found theirs.

I tried asking CVS (pharmacy) about "pure" ammonia and they didn't know what the hell I was talking about.

Just use Maxicrop seaweed extract, it contains nearly 5% Ammonia.

Add a small amount everyday and test the Amm level the following day. Repeat process everyday until you get the Amm level to around 1.0ppm.

The other nutrients in the Maxicrop will feed your seedlings until such time as you add fish.
