Has anybody thought about using a conical container for a swirl filter? I was curious about it and found a 60 gallon with an outlet on the bottom that is food grade. I was thinking that using a filter like this should make it easy to purge the excess solids from the system if they build up too much. I've included the tech drawing just to illustrate the shape of the vessel.

Yea, they have been used in many situations. Ideally, swirls filters, RFF's and solid settlers should have a coned bottom. A lot of RAS even have conical fish tank bottoms for the extraction of wastes.

Charlie the conical bottom of a fish tank is to allow it to be completely emptied. Lots of self cleaning fish tanks have perfectly flat bottoms. For a conical bottom to be effective with dealing with solids you need a much steeper angle. This is why commercial swirl filters and the like have very steeply sloped conical bottoms.

I was looking at one of my fermentation chambers for beer brewing and just was really noticing how this would be great for solid removal (works great for dead yeast). But as I'm wanting to use worms in my grow bed I think I will not be using this setup after all.
