Depends what you are growing I would think? As well as how large will you let things grow. Eg cabbages would require more space than basil.

Faye is right of course. But from what I have read 8" for head lettuce ( some do 6" and tray and of set) and 6" for herbs should be fine. What are you planning on growing?
