Post subject:  fish for New Zealand Aquaponic system

Hi, I am new to aquaponics and would like to start building my own setup, the only problem is what fish to use here in the South Island of New Zealand. If any one can give me any advice that will be great.
Thanks

Your fisheries laws basically restrict you to either grass carp... or goldfish...

Been looking at this also, since I have a few blue plastic barrels and would quite like to set up a test system (have rabbit issues with things grown in dirt). So I guess carp really is the only way to go if you want to eat the fish?

Wouldnt mind, but am going to start out doing the plastic barrel thing first just to get a feel for the whole aquaponics thing. Have a few barrels to use, and as of today, now have a few bags of hydroton and a pump :)

There are Rainboow Trout hatcheries in NZ. Surely you could get some?

Why not salmon. There's a salmon on the west coast a bit north of haast by memory.(havnt been there for a few years) go and check it out. Dude was awesome, took me and the misses for a look at everything just because we asked about it. It was just big nets in a creek running through his property. As a bonus the brown trout would hang around and scab a feed as it flowed out of the ponds. There were some absolute monsters in there.

Wow I'd have thought NZ would have had plenty of species to use with all those beautiful rivers and lakes.
is it because you're not aloud to keep anything?
Also I thought salmon were salt water and went up rivers to spawn ( Im not sure if that's correct but I'm sure I heard it somewhere)
