Post subject:  How much ammonia to add per gallon to start?

Hello everyone. Looked lots of places and need to make sure I have this right.

Looks as if I should add 1ml of pure 10 percent ammonia per 1 gallon.

So a 600-650 gallon set up should take approx 20 ounces.

Is this correct?

And after that do I keep adding or just let it cycle that and be done?

Thanks!

Hi "Next level"

You will find there are so many different ways to cycle a system that if you paid heed to all
of them, you will be totally confused.

The truth is, it doesn't matter.

As long as you add ammonia to a system, the bacteria will grow and the system will cycle in
about six weeks (water temp 10-12 cel )

In my system (2500 litres) I added 100 teaspoons of urea and some seasol (trace elements)
and walked away for six weeks (didn't add anything else) and it cycled perfectly.

So, 1ml of pure 10 percent ammonia per 1 gallon is a good place to start.

I have found backyard aquaponics is extremely forgiving, so even if you over do it, you can just
dilute it after it has cycled because the bacteria is already established in your media.

You will find patience is the hardest thing to deal with.

cheers Lou
