What most would say is, for each 10 liters of water, have one tilapia. That is the maximum recommended fish for 10 liters of water. So, in your case, 17 tilapia is maximum number of recommended fish. If you set your system correct, and have proper size of grew beds, then you should not need to change your fish tank water, just you have to add some water every now and then, due to evapuration and the amount of water that your plants consume. |

the amount of fish in a tank is dependant on more than just how big your fish tank is, it also depends on how much filter area that you have. please read through some of the members systems to get an idea of how a system is built and learn from their failures and successes. a tank of 170 liters is far too small to support any fish apart from small goldfish or tropical fish and would be unlikely to give enough nitrates for a 200 hole veg system |

For a hydro system where you are counting plant holes I assume it is either an NFT or Raft system, you will need to add solids and bio-filtration to make such a system work for Aquaponics. I fear you are not going to get better results from such a system by converting it to aquaponics. You need Filtration for the fish and if you simply send fish water into tubes with plants in them you will have struggling plants and dieing fish and probably a stinky mess in 3 weeks to a month. Here is a blog post on basic media system design http://www.aquaponiclynx.com/media-bed-aquaponic-design You might be better off getting some tubs of gravel and a fish tank and running something separate from your old hydro system. |
