I'm one of those aquarium converts. I will probably finish and start my system this weekend. I plan on using an old used aquarium filter to help cycle the AP system. One small tank is due to change out. The filter has both filter media plus some charcoal enclosed by a plastic grill. I want to just drop the entire filter into the bottom of the GB when I fill it. Will that be a problem? The plastic is inert. The charcoal should only do good things. The blue filter media will eventually break down? I'm not really sure, first AP system. If I don't drop the whole thing in there, I'll probably just wash it out into the bottom of the GB. |

I'd say if it was safe in an Aquarium it'll be safe in the GB. Stuff I've read (on this forum) suggests putting the bacteria laden stuff about halfway up in the new GB rather than the bottom. It'll stay nice and moist there. |

I think DuiNui is right but I'd just go with washing it out. Make certain you aren't using chlorinated water for this since this would kill the bacteria. No point putting other stuff (like the filter) in the growbed when all you're really after are the bacteria. Plastic could eventually break and cause cuts as you're digging around. Just my 2 cents worth. |
