My ornamental pond has PIFT, no bottom drain; Swirl is about as useful as tits on a bull.

I have a question

Where do the worm castings go?

Mineralisation.

I receive updates from Earthan Group via email regularly.

His latest email that I opened this morning had a youtube clip that directly related

to this topic.

I think this totally answers the question.

ie: Mineralisation does not completely clean the growbeds.

As I have mentioned on this forum and Murray's forum before I do not keep fish in my system

over summer. ( I used powerfeed this summer, on special at Bunnings).

Over winter I run trout.

Unlike the Youtube clip I clean all plants before planting in the beds, so no soil is ever introduced

to my system.

So, if mineralisation keeps the growbeds clean by the end of summer mine should be spotless.

They are not.

cheers Lou

Sorry for thread necro, but I am dying to know what the actual elemental content is of that 'sludge' ... I don't suppose anyone has access to a lab that can perform mass spectrometry? I might be completely off-base here but I would guess that it's got a lot of silicon dioxide (from breakdown of the gravel) and perhaps some other metal oxides.

Certain plants are able to process metals, for example Water Hyacinths can chelate and uptake heavy metals to a pretty extreme degree. As an experiment, one might stir these solids into a tank with several water hyacinths growing and see if they are able to clean the inorganic sludge.
