Hi All.
Ive currently got an old galv tank in the ground which i have plans on using for a fish tank.
The problems are that ive been told that I shouldnt use old rain water tanks because fish dont like them.
Second of all the water comes from catchment from a shed roof which has been painted with a water based paint which i think is flaking off into the water.
Not sure weather to line the tank or start fresh with filtered rain water.
This is all pretty new to me so just after a bit more info.
Cheers..

You could line the tank but straight gal will leech the gal chemicals into the water which are toxic to fish

As for the paint flakes into the water I reckon you wouldn't chance any forign nasties into your water as it's nit worth cycling your system to find dead fish.

town water is Usable as long as you airate it for a few weeks and cycle it through your beds I guess that's a bonus to fisless cycling you can burn all the chlorine off before you get fish

Galvanised tanks may be the cause of unexplained fish deaths in some cases, you can either line the tank with a food grade liner or sealer which is safe to the fish.
One thing that you want to be sure of in any system that you will be eating from is that what goes into is guaranteed to be safe- paint flakes add a variable to the system which is unknown. (Why would you take a risk?)
Scheme water with chlorine will off gas in around 24 hours and we have found this safe to add to our fish tanks if we are topping up- little and often is the key.
A safe guard is to add a tap timer- eliminating the chance of overflowing the fish tank as we have seen many times over.

"If the first expense, is the last expense, it is the least expense" something I learnt along the way.

thanks m3tal.

Think iam going to go with emptying the tank and lining it with a food grade plastic as well as filtering the next lot
of rain water to get rid of the finer particals.
Cool and cheers.
