Post subject:  Excel Database for Daily Data Readings
I am sure there are lots here with fancy Excel databases that they put all their info such as water quality readings and feed amounts into based on some of the nice graphs I have seen posted. Although I am alright with Excel I am no expert and I don't really have time to reinvent the wheel.

Does anyone here have a comprehensive database with linked graphs set up that they would be willing to give me a copy of to use at school for the kids to enter daily data into.

I am thinking along the lines of date, max and min air temps, water temp, pH, Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, EC, TDS, number of feeds and feed amounts. Big ask I know but as I said, I don't want to have to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to.

Anyone who is willing to share just let me know and I will PM you my email address to send it to.

Gonna be piccy here and tell you Excel is not a database.
Unfortunately I have not bothered to build such a spreadsheet. If you need any help automating charts or data entry or anything you think Excel can't do, give us a yell. There's little excel has ever challenged me with and won.

Well you had better build me an access database then so you don't have to be piccy :geek:

Thanks for the offer with excel, if I have to create one myself I might just do that. I was full bottle on excel and access a few years ago whgen I use to manage all the water quality data at Mt Lyell and Temora Mines but you loose it pretty quickly when you don't use it.

Burnsey... have PM'd you with the xls file that I used to map my solar array project...

Plotted air temp (twice daily)... min & max temp... tank temp (twice daily)....

Would be easy enough to expand tp include the other values... but personally... I'd put all the water parameter values into a seperate spreadsheet..

Big notebook and a pen near the test kit. Just transfer it later to excel.

Thanks Rupert, anyone got one similar for water chemical parameters? If not I guess this one will be adapted :) .

Seeing as we're being pedantic I might as well disagree with you (someone's gotta stick up for the guy hehe) :)

A definition of a database is roughly;

a collection of information that is organized so that it can easily be accessed, managed, and updated.


You can find other such examples on google.

As the word applies in the IT world I'd agree Excel is not a database compared against the likes of mssql, oracle, mysql, db2, *cough* Access etc etc However for small business and small scale data collection (such that the OP wants to do)excel trumps them all.

The charting and pivot table features of excel are enough to pick it over Access.

Access is a database, but not very relational and most certainly not multi user, and therefore in my mind completely useless.

Excel is an extremely powerful spreadsheet application that can imitate a DB in many ways. It is a MUCH better software package than access. Access is PODS.

If you're desperate, I have en extremely complex (read 20Mb) excel spreadsheet I use to govern all my finances and predict the future a little bit. As it's my personal finances, I'd have to doctor the data somewhat though, so am reluctant to be bothered.

Lotus 123 was a far better spreadsheet but for some reason, after a trip to America expenses paid, our IT section decided we would 'standardise' to Excel. :roll:

Thanks for the offer KP but not that desperate to ask you to go to such extremes. I am sure there will be someone here who has what I am looking for otherwise I guess I will just have to spend my time more wisely than playing spider solitaire :wink:

Just open the one I sent you Burnsey... save it as a different filename... alter the header values... and plot headings... to whatever you want/need..

It's about as simple as you could ever need... :dontknow:
