Hi everyone i was just wondering if anyone has bred marron and if so could give me a step by step run down i currently have 2 males and 5 females and as its now going into breeding season was wondering what i need to do should they breed.
Should i get a separate tank to place the females that end up with eggs and when should i separate them and what do i feed them and when do you separate the young from the mother

any help would be great

thanks
Frank

Hey mate, havent bred them before, but as a kid had a little project when we accidentally took a female with eggs home. What we did, was put her in her own tank, with a little bit of mesh with small holes proped up on the bottom of the tank. The reason behind it is that she eats the young after a while, so theyd be able to go under the mesh and when they were all hatched we took her out and let them grow. Im not sure if this is hard science, just what the old man said.

Troutman would be the best to ask but from my understanding the marron start mating at around 20 - 30 months old and then mate as the weather warms up, much like yabbies and redclaw. Usually into the spring as the water warms. You can replicate this in an aquarium set up, Ive done this before with yabbies. Then usually the off spring are released at the begining of summer and stay attached to the mothers pleopods for another couple of months of grow out. This is when you would remove either the babies or the mother.

Did this with a couple of yabbies years ago, and after the female egged I pulled out the boy then when the babies started dropping of her tail I picked her up and stripped the rest off, then put her out in the big tank. The little guys grew ok, but I think I only got a couple through to going in the ap.
Better success could be had with a lot of little tanks and grading them as they grow me thinks
But yeah Troutman would be the best to ask
