big biccies for what you are getting

for $1000

http://backyardaquaponics.com/shop.html ... egory_id=8

or

http://backyardaquaponics.com/shop.html ... egory_id=8

Either one of these would be better.

-trickle system NOT NEEDED
-1 x 1000L tank IBC $100
-1 x 150L sump IBC $100
-3 stage water filter in 1 system (1. soil seperator, 2.mechanical filter, 3.biological filter) NOT NEEDED
-1 x UV light NOT NEEDED
-2 x water pumps (1 in main tank & 1 in sump) $100
-1 x air pump and 6 x air stones $40
-plumbling and 12m of framing $200
- 20 x grow beds $200
- all media (expanded clay and perlite & vermiculite) $100

So for $1000 you could buy new and get a better system.

Sorry if I seem harsh, but $1k for a hydroponic/aquaponic mashup is a bit rich.

That system does not include media - 10 bags @ $40 each - or a stand - BYAP stand $435 or 12 x Limestone blocks plus some timber approx $200.

10 Blue Barrels would cost $30 - $40 each so a little more than the $200 you say.

$100 would only get you 2 and half bags of expanded clay so 125 litres worth - I doubt that would be enough for that system.

And one big advantage of purchasing a second hand system is it *should* be cycled already for you.

I agree with you Freoboy. No specs makes it hard to accurately value the system.

No phone number (although the Gumtree ad has one) also makes it harder to contact the seller (they have joined on the day they posted and have only made one post - hopefully they are keeping an eye on this thread and/or checking their private messages).

On a budget system, I would use Scoria.
Besser Blocks are $2.50 each a B.
Sleepers are about $15 each.

He aint using blue barrels, looks like white plastic planter boxes or broccoli foam boxes which are about 20 to 40 litres each. So my evaluation of $100 holds true, especially 50L of hydroton is about $30 to $50.

Blue barrels in Melbourne http://melbourne.gumtree.com.au/c-Stuff ... Z263054318 are $5.

EDIT...
Not here specifically to discuss how cheap I can go, just here to point out that THIS system for $1000 isnt worth it.

check out the size of that cat!! it obviously reaps the rewards of home grown fish. yeah and it looks like it leaks, notice the discolouring under the foam planters.
