Flat out delivering trout I would assume Gavin, but here is a Silver Perch question for you seeing you are also a Silver Perch guru.

Where can I buy SP feed from?? I can buy trout and Barra feed from BYAP and Stirling Bulk Distributors in Tenderten but the Barra pellets are still 43% protein which is nearly as high as trout and it is floating.

I have been feeding 6mm trout pellets crushed to my SP but I believe I should be going to lower protein as I think it may have been your advice.

I feed my silvers the same food as Trout. When they reach around 400g I just back the feed off to keep them not so fat.

Floating feed is the best.

Thanks for the trout, Gavin.

One didn't make it because it jumped out and wasn't spotted in time. The others were fine in their little esky - once i switched the aerator. As it turns out, not all $12 aerators are equal.

We had managed to get all but 3 of the SPs out of the main tank before putting the trout in. The trout didn't have any issues settling in and were chasing the SPs around pretty much straight away.

Yes thanks Gavin,

I got my 50 yesterday and they are doing very well. I covered my tank yesterday afternoon with bird netting at Gavins advice to stop any escapes!! I dont think i lost any but if i did my 2 beagles would have snapped up the tasty little trout "fish fingers" in no time anyway so ill have to just count them later as i take them out to work it out.

Its my first time with trout, they are much more fun than barra! :D Even the dogs are taking an interest in the fish now!

Rick, all the literature regarding the protein percentages for Sivers recommend around 30 - 35%. You are right in that Skretting only make a 43% protein content pellet for native fish as its primarily made for Barra and Murray Cod. Grobest make a 35% and Ridleys do a 38% specifically for Silvers but I dont know of anywhere in WA where these are available. Glen Forrest stockfeeds also do a 35% Silver Perch pellet and although the quality isnt as good as the others it is quite cheap and the fish will still eat it. I feed mine a combination of the Glen Forrest and the Skretting Classic 43%.

Tony, I'm afraid you wont ever get a Trout that big!!! The pic on my avatar is the world record Rainbow Trout and it was about 43lb from memory so maybe that would be a more realistic goal to chase.

Glad to hear Dazed, were they the fish that went out to Toodyay??

Good to hear Will, for some reason they tend to jump out more in the night so it sounds like you got your tank covered up in time. Yes, trout are definately the most entertaining of the fish we have available for Aquaponics systems.

Have been occasions when I've fed my Silvers higher protein trout or barra feed... I just compensate by cutting the feed rate back a bit... especially when the Silvers are over 500gm and don't need as much protein anyway...

yip,

they were the ones that went to Toodyay. I had another look today. The 3 SPs are still there. I guess the trout aren't big enough to eat them yet. Although, the SPs show no interest in food while the trout are very hungry. I don't think it'll be long before the SPs are on the menu.

Haa, if I had a dollar for everytime I have heard that I would be pretty rich by now!!

Lower protein feeds are usually cheaper so depending on how many mouths you have to feed can equate to quite a cost saving over the lifetime of the fish.

True, but in a short season, I feel that the extra growth warrants the slightly higher feed costs.
