We have friends who bought yacon at the Freo markets. Does anyone know of a local stockist for the tubers?

Wish I did; if anyone has some they'd be smart to hang on to them, specially with the new quarantine rules and charges.

Unfortunately they have become the elusive tuber in WA, now that I have managed to establish a garden here (in the deep south) I'd like to try them again, they were an excellent eating vegetable when we had them in Perth.

I've grown yacon successfully in my small system a couple of times, in the greenhouse, but have decided not to grow it in there any more, as the white fly build up to ridiculous numbers on it, and then start affecting nearby plants. I might try some outside in hte big system some time, as it is a delicious tuber, and very versatile- able to be used in salads, on breakfast cereals, with cheese on crackers, or even with ice cream!.

The problem in WA isn't whether to grow or not to grow, it's the fact that our Dept of Ag won't let us import the tubers. I never had whitefly or any other problems with the growing when I was in Perth but it took us a few years to shift and get organized and all of the tubers i had simply didn't survive. They are proving to be irreplaceable.

I realise that, it was just a comment on the white fly problem I encountered when growing it in a greenhouse.

If you're looking for it in WA, I suggest looking up Jetto's Patch, but don't try sneaking in to get it, as Trespassers will be composted!

edit; a search on their website had 0 results for yacon. Worth a try though

I got some from Jhettos and have been breeding it up. where abouts are you Rod ? Probably a bit late to grow it out this season, though I may be able to give you some tubers for next year.

Tass1 was selling them at the start of the summer season for about $15 each. Find they appreciate some PM shade here in Perth.

I found that even though the tops die off, the tubers overwinter in the GB just fine, and get away to a good start in spring.

dont leave yacon "dead" for too long though, i have had a whole garden bed worth die off and rot away because of dry conditions, taking one or two out for storage can help with the safety of not losing the species.

Would appreciate that mattyoga, I'm not 100% sure that they'll thrive here but I certainly want to give them a try. We are out on Pt Henry Peninsula overlooking the Southern Ocean about 200 Km east of Albany. We don't get frosts but we have constant wind.

Next year is fine and I'm quite happy to pay for them and to cover postage too if you end up with any to spare. I have a couple of sons in Perth so might be able to organize something via them if convenient.

Hey Rod, my mum has a nice big patch growing here in Denmark. I'm leaving in a few days and will be heading to Esperance, though I'd rather not go all the way into BB with my van on, but I could always leave a bag of tubers somewhere at Boxwoodhill or Jeramungup for you to pick up if you are likely to get that way in the next week or so.
