A bloke on our FB page just sent me this link if it helps Eric

http://centenarylandscaping.com.au/shop-products/bulk-decorative-pebbles-gravels-decorative-pebbles-gravels/scoria-red/

Works out around the same as clay by the bag but a ¼m³ would have to work out cheaper..
Couldn't find any around when I set up the system a few ears ago..
HTH mate :thumbright:

14 mm Is that size ok?
Seams to a lot cheaper
What's the weight comparison like?
Maybe I could do the whole tonne and people could come and get some from me here.
Weighing / measuring might be interesting though
Might need to set up a Chinese scale

Thats incredibly expensive, someone trying to cash in on the fact that people use scoria in aquaponics.. It's just rock.. A small standard trailer load will be about a ton, and over here in W.A. a similar trailer load of similar rock (pea gravel) would be $60.

There's bound to be a local rock you can use, what about bluemetal?

EB's right there must be something suitable locally.

Here's the variety of my local garden supplier stocks, there must be something similar up there?

Just make sure you test it before buying.

No problems using 20 mm blue gravel. Just put the small garden hand shovel in, plant and move the gravel to support the plants. Weight may be the problem but I always over build and the price was right compared to clay balls.

You hit the nail on the head CC Bear
Weight is the issue.
I thought scoria is lighter than the other gravels /stone
Being volcanic rock it also has greater surface area for the same volume, meaning less grow beds for fish stock required, I'm sure I don't need to teach you gentlemen how to suck eggs.
I have been paying attention to what is written here.

EB I'm used to paying higher prices here in South East Queensland, it seems to be one of those things that happens here .
The scoria would have to be trucked in as Bn Bob said, they charge what ever they think they can get, if you say anything about high price, the response is nearly always freight.

Mind you if you get it at $60 a tonne I wonder how much a container would cost transported.... But wait I couldn't get five people to take clay balls at reasonable price how am I going to get rid of ten tonnes of this?

BnBob. Thanks for the link

Scoria aint that great.. I don't think it's much lighter than many other rocks you can use, certainly no where near expanded clay.. It's horrible to work with, sharp on the hands when digging.. And if you think using scoria over any other rock media will give you extra stocking capacity, and this comes from reading the forum info, the wrong info is getting out...

Why can't your system handle the weight?

I've seen plenty of IBC's on here with gravel/scoria in them.

Google landscaping supplies in your area, there will be plenty of places that can sell it to you, and will deliver it to your doorstep.

One other advantage I've seen for gravel, when people pull out plants, it comes with a root ball full of clay balls. The roots pull out cleanly with gravel.
