thanks for the comments guys.

well by the sounds of it my best bet would be to contact a milk company directly and see what they say. it may just be a case of getting permission of of them to buy some old ones.

will let you know how i go. buy the sounds of it though it may not be worth the effort. thought i could get a heap on the cheap. may simply be better of buying containers.

thing is milk crates 9 milk crates would fit into my 1x1m beds perfectly.

oh well.

Were you going to grow fish in them BF? Wouldn't it be a bit cramped - poor buggers.

no way. thats cruel. who am i to judge though. some would disagree.

i want to use them as modular grow pots.

the other beauty of them is i can easily use pvc pipe to make a box to place a square screen on. the plant will grow up to the screen and trained to fit the screen.

this has many advantages.

No, we don't use glass milk bottles, not for the lat 25 years any how :-) Why do you ask? We did use glass soft drink bottles, refillable until as recently as 15 years ago, and many of the bottle crates remain (as seen in F&F's piccies), but the milk crates hold cartons best, though I think the plastic bottles were designed to fit them. They are delivered to the store in these crates.

When I asked at the dairy they gave me 10 "damaged" crates that were suitable.

Otherwise new ones cost $10-$12 from a plastics place
