I'm on 24 hours. The water returning to the tank is an important source of aeration for me.

and me........my pump runs 2.5 min every 30 min and is only 90W so its not THAT "unecconomical"....the draining of my growbed takes 14.5 min and is my source of aeration...I'm sure me lil crayfish "Bitey" appreciates that lol

My fish would be okay without Steve - cause I do have an air pump going all the time. Do the plants only remove nitrate when photosynthesising? Do the fish not create ammonia during the night?

Interesting question!

Dunno, i think i've read somewhere that root growth occurs at night, but i might be wrong. I wonder if a reasonably stocked system would show much ammo increase................

Steve, I think Muzza turns his off every night and just has his compressor running - I bought a low lph pump adn spent endless hours getting a siphon to work with it so that I could leave it running 24/7 - Ima YES man

Weather is a bit against me here in regards to cold nights, I check temps morning and night and they are rangin from 21 - 25c, my system is small tho.

Dropped down to 16c in the tank last week on a very cold night but didn't have the SP then

we don't have a proper grow bed yet, so can't really say.
But, with the ~50 little fish in the tank and the veggie floats, I am turning the pump OFF during the day! It is so windy here and there are so few fish that we give the pump a rest when I'm home.
There are still plans afoot for the wind-powered aerator... getting closer...

I'll have bigger tanks and the GH by then which will help, 200l in black plastic liner doesn't give much insulation unfortunately :?
