On the continuous flow gb's I've been using raised PVC filled with gravel where the water enters the GB. I find it works like a filter and the worms are very active in this area. While looking around for something larger I noticed a few brake drums and wondered if these could be used. They are aged and might be able to add somthing to the system as they break down. Any thoughts.

Nah duff, they will rust too quickly at the interface between the iron and the water.

I'd have to think it would be too much....its not just iron in brake drums. There'd be other metals as well, and a lot of carbon.

Bugger. Will have to go with a bit of blue drum instead.

You could use a pond liner on them.

Make a potbelly fireplace out of them and use as a patio heater, they work great.

Was only thinking of them for the iron and 1" thick they would last a while. They also make great weights.
